May 17th – Logistics of a 1:1 at the SHS

Devices
1. Webcam
· Yes, they have them – no we can’t access like LM
· Problems? Talk to Anita
· Can use to skype with other schools
· Program disabled until you ask tech to enable for a purpose

2. Software
· Office Suite – word, excel, publisher, etc.
· No photoshop – there are other photo editing programs -
· Math on one set of laptops
· Optimized to search on internet
· All good for Blended Schools
· 2.0 tools work well

3. Filtering
· All kids forced through filter while in school
· At home will be filtered with school devices, not with own

4. Insurance
District computers – 3 choices
1. Borrow – back and forth to school - $35 to cover accidental damage, not neglect (pencil closed in cover is neglect, bump is accidental); after 4 years kid can take it home; free and reduced lunch do NOT have to pay insurance fee, still goes home after senior year.
2. Own device – back and forth to school – we do not insure – homeowners insurance covers
3. District owned, stays in school – sign out/in each day – kid still expected to do work at home
4. Freshmen will turn in current netbooks for summer maintenance, will get them back 3rd (or so) week of school, in a PRIDE session.
5. Other 300 laptops will be assigned to teachers by 1st day of school.
· Teacher protocol if something happens to the netbook during class – kid brings it to the library and Bekci switches it out. Kid signs it out/in everyday until his is fixed.
· Hinge problem is typical with the netbooks
· We will not fix personally owned laptops.

Expectation of Students
1. Personal Devices
o I pods and other electronic devices OK – teacher discretion about how/when use
o Recommendations that have Office Suite, but don’t all have; we will provide resources
o Kids will have cell phones and some restrictions will be removed; teaching when it is appropriate and not (low on Serge list of behavior problems)

2. Charging Battery
· Can last 4 to 7 hours – not good to have it on all period; by time get to 7th period, need charging
· If not using netbooks in a class, tell kids to logout to save battery. Closed lid uses some battery, but not a lot; some programs use more power than others.
· Encourage (hound) kids to bring power cords and to charge every night.
· Netbook power cords will be interchangeable, but personally owned laptops need their own power cords.
· If they are out of power and they need to take a test on Blended Schools, send to library for a loaner.

3. Respect the ‘books
· FC currently – after 3 times of not bringing netbook, forgetters get detention.
· Don’t touch anyone else’s netbook.
· Ctr Alt Delete – lock this computer – when student leaves room to nurse, lav, wherever.
· Phys Ed – must be locked in locker – not left on bench
· Has an ID tag on bag, but may not “personalize” laptop with stickers
· Between classes, laptop must be transported in bag
· Bag must be school-acceptable size.

4. Digital Citizenship
· Encourage kids to have external drives, flash, passport, etc.
· Kids with own devices – if they have inappropriate photos, music, etc. on their desktop (background photo, or showing kids something inappropriate stored on laptop) - high on Serge list. Send to office.
· Internet Safety Curriculum infused through PRIDE at HS level
· Set course expectations/what’s appropriate at beginning of year.

5. Food and beverage
· Not allowed near laptops
· Food/liquid damage not covered by insurance

Expectation of Teachers
1. Netbooks – expectations
· Lid halfway closed during teacher lecture (turning off/on takes time; kids should boot up as soon as they get to class)
· Plan ahead – if you have a test coming up, know where the extra 300 laptops are so you can access one or two for kids who “play the game” of not coming prepared.
· Tell kids before they leave your room, “PUT YOUR netbook IN YOUR BAG.
· In the hall, if you see a kid with a netbook out of bag, stop and tell him, “Put it in your bag.”
· Tell kids not to pre-set locker locks to pop open…

2. Blackboard – expectations
· Central repository for course materials and communication of those!

3. Grades
· Still PowerTeacher
· There is a Blackboard Grade Center – must keep PT as authoritative spot for grades-point kids and teacher there; BB not tied to SBG; grade center can be evidence

4. Electronic Communication
· School centered kid email coming – under research
· Can communicate with kids through Blackboard
· Teacher communication can go as a text to a kid’s phone
· Through Blackboard messaging, not through outlook
· Given the online forum, how often/when do teachers need to be available to answer?
· Teacher does not receive email alert in Outlook when a kid posts on Blackboard…must check Blackboard message center

5. Collaboration
· Teachers can share and place each other’s materials on Blackboard class. (Audit form expects this.)

6. Professional Development
· Establish own workshops and PLCs – put in My Learning Plan
· Consider small groups each month that look at what has worked, what hasn’t and how to make adjustments.
· Use Wimba classroom
· Use Skype
· If you get an email (Outlook) from Blended Schools about a FREE webinar, go ahead, if it helps!

Device Security
1. Lunch Periods
· No laptops at lunch
· A lunch – kids bring their laptops/books to classroom; teacher locks up; OR kids take laptop to locker
· B lunch – laptops in room; teacher lock room
· C lunch – take to locker or leave in class; teacher lock room

2. Gym Class
· Phys Ed – must be locked in locker – not left on bench
· Stolen laptop – because student left it on bench – kid must pay $300; if stolen from locked classroom, will not be charged

3. After School
· Take home and charge
· Athletes – lock in lockers
· Away games – lock in HS locker, get upon return

4. Between Classes
· Tell kids before they leave your room, “PUT YOUR netbook IN YOUR BAG.
· In the hall, if you see a kid with a netbook out of bag, stop and tell him, “Put it in your bag.”

5. Tech School
· Not taking to tech; must lock in HS locker

Classroom Management
1. Appropriate Uses
· See teacher expectations in audit and evaluation forms.
· Build course in Blackboard.

2. Technology Issues
· Send students to library if problem with netbook.
· On your Schoolwires page, put contact information and link to Blackboard course.
· Put a note on page, “Access class information through your Blackboard account.”
· Kids need access at home to internet or they can’t do online work at home. Can still do word processing.
· Access to printers – NO! Kids can use flashdrive to access another computer (on a bank in the library or other room) and print from there.
· ASK FC teachers about this in p.m.

3. Charging
· See above.

4. Computer Availability for all Students
· Be ready to go beginning of year.
